When Amie Baima opened Skillets Café & Grill 30 years ago, it was in response to people seeking more breakfast options from the bakery she owned at the time. Since then, her restaurant has been a favorite destination for Hilton Head Island residents and visitors for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Today, Skillets Café & Grill specializes in freshly prepared southern fare and seafood. It also offers a pasta menu, full bar, indoor/outdoor dining, pet-friendly porches, take out, delivery and an extensive kids’ menu.
To celebrate Skillet’s 30-year milestone, Amie invites the public to join her Thursday, September 14 at 10 a.m. for a ribbon cutting. From Thursday through Monday, September 18, diners can enjoy a variety of daily anniversary specials, including “3 for $30” meals that include a choice from each course, appetizer, entrée and dessert. And, Elvis will return to the building Friday, September 15, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Amie said, “Our success is due to our residents as well as the visitors who come back year after year. Although there are many new restaurants, it’s important for people to support the ‘Mom and Pop,’ tried and true places that have been serving them for years.” She is pleased to continue to offer fresh, high-quality comfort food at affordable prices.
The family-friendly Skillets’ operations have been a family affair as well. Amie’s father, John Baima, is still keeping the books. Her son, Evan, who worked at the restaurant until he went to college, is now back and heading up the kitchen. Many of the staff have been with her for years. And Amie feels that the community is part of their family.
Amie, who earned a BS degree in Food Science from Winthrop University and a culinary degree from Johnson & Wales, grew up on Hilton Head, but didn’t think that she would return after school. Then the Island called her back. She said, “There’s something about coming over the bridge and breathing in the scent of the water that always makes me feel that I’m home.”
